Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh will host his annual Pancakes and Surfing Family Fun Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 25 at the Rhodes Junior High School swimming pool, 1860 S. Longmore. The Mesa Fire and Medical Department will be serving pancakes and the Phoenix East/Mesa Hilton will also be providing snacks and refreshments.

The FlowRider, a wave pool that is a cross between skateboarding, snowboarding and wakeboarding, will be open for attendees to experience free of charge. Riders will be on a first come, first served basis and must have a signed waiver and watch a short safety video before riding. The Rhodes Junior High swimming pool and Splash Pad will also be open to all attendees and the Mesa Fire and Medical Department will be putting on a water safety clinic.

For the second straight year there will be a FlowRider competition between the Mesa Fire and Medical Department and the Mesa Police Department. Three members of each department will compete for the title of FlowRider Champion and the trophy that goes along with it. Representatives from the City of Mesa will serve as judges for the competition. Last year the Mesa Fire and Medical Department won the competition.

"This event has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few years and it just keeps getting better and better," Vice Mayor Kavanaugh said. "Last year was an intense surf battle between the firefighters and the police officers, and I expect more of the same this year. You also get to learn about water safety, experience the FlowRider for yourself and enjoy the great pool at Rhodes. It really is a great family event."

Both the Mesa Fire and Medical Department's historic Mesa Fire Truck and the Mesa Police SWAT Armored Vehicle will be at the event, along with representatives from various City departments.

Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to win door prizes, including FlowRider passes, a two night stay at the Hyatt Place Phoenix/Mesa, a family four pack to Sesame Street Live at the Mesa Arts Center, tickets to ABBA - The Concert at the Mesa Arts Center and a Visit Mesa gift bag.
