2015-2016 Historical Fiction Writing Contest for Mesa students

September 21, 2015 at 3:23 pm

The Mesa Historic Preservation Board is sponsoring a Historical Fiction Writing Contest for all fourth-grade, fifth-grade and sixth-grade students living in the City of Mesa regardless whether the school is public, private, charter or home. It will provide students the opportunity to learn more about Mesa's history and practice their writing skills as they create a fictional story around a historic event in the City. The contest is open until Nov. 19.

This year's topic is to write a story about life within one of the City's designated historic districts. The setting for the story can be anytime during the history of that area up until 1965. The story should describe what life might have been like in that neighborhood and Mesa during the time period selected for the story.

Each essay must reflect the student's own research, writing and original thinking. The essay will be a maximum of 750 words in length and may be typed or neatly written. Copies can be sent to:

John Wesley
Acting Historic Preservation Officer
City of Mesa
P.O. Box 1466
Mesa, AZ 85211-1466

Essays must be postmarked on or before the contest deadline of Nov. 19, 2015. Essays will not be returned to the author as they become property of the Mesa Historic Preservation Board. They can also be sent by email to john.wesley@mesaaz.gov.

Every contestant will receive a certificate of participation. There will be cash awards given to the first ($50), second ($30) and third ($20) place contest winners. The top three essay writers will be recognized at a Mesa City Council meeting. For more information and to obtain an entry form, visit http://mesaaz.gov/about-us/historic-preservation.
