April 5, 2016 at 3:14 pm

Mesa signed on to become an Employer of National Service in celebration of the Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. As an Employer of National Service, Mesa supports the recruitment of AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Peace Corps alumni for employment at the City of Mesa and at leading companies and organizations throughout our community.

"City of Mesa employees are committed to knowledge, respect and integrity," Mayor John Giles said. "I support National service alumni working in Mesa because they share these values and are dedicated to making a difference in our community."

Since the President's launch of the initiative in 2014, more than 350 companies, nonprofits, and public agencies have signed on as Employers of National Service including Disney, Comcast, NBC Universal, MasterCard, Delta Air Lines, Sodexo, United Way Worldwide, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and the National Science Foundation.

"National service develops essential skills that make AmeriCorps alumni valuable assets for organizations and companies seeking great employees," said Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps. "We are honored that the City of Mesa recognizes that AmeriCorps alumni are strong leaders who are motivated, flexible, innovative, and outcome-oriented. By taking this step, the City of Mesa is making a smart move to attract talented, dedicated, and experienced leaders to work to their workforce."

Altogether, more than 1.2 million Americans have served in AmeriCorps and Peace Corps. More than 960,000 individuals have participated in AmeriCorps since its inception in 1994. AmeriCorps members serve communities across the country through organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, City Year, Teach For America, and the American Red Cross.

Since 1961, more than 220,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers, developing lasting relationships with community members overseas as they work toward sustainable change that lives on long after their service.

CNCS and its partners are actively recruiting new employers from all sectors to sign on as Employers of National Service. More information is available at www.nationalservice.gov/employers.

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service and champions community solutions through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, Social Innovation Fund, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs, and leads the President's national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
