MESA, ARIZ. - In recognition of Mesa's participation as a Tree City in the state of Arizona, and to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Tree City USA program, a heritage tree was donated and planted by the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management. The tree planting took place following today's ribbon cutting of the new adaptive playground at Dobson Ranch Park, 2359 S. Dobson Rd.
The native Desert Willow tree was donated by Treeland Nurseries, an Arizona Nursery Association member and family owned and operated nursery located in Mesa since 1965. "This is a beautiful tree and a great summer bloomer that is a favorite for hummingbirds," said Laura Hyneman, Deputy Director of the Environmental & Sustainability Division. "I know it will make a great addition to the park and to this new and uniquely special playground area."
Arizona is home to 29 recognized Tree City communities that have demonstrated their investment in the urban forests for now and future generations. The City of Mesa has been named a Tree City community since 2010. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
