It is with a heavy heart that the City of Mesa learned about the recent passing of Mayor Don Strauch. He served as mayor from 1980 to 1984, Vice Mayor from 1974 to 1978 and was a member of City Council from 1972 to 1978. He also served in the Arizona House of Representatives for Mesa's district 29.
During his tenure as mayor, the Superstition Freeway, or US 60, was extended to Power Road, opening in 1985. Another milestone was the building of the Hughes Helicopter plant, which is now owned by Boeing and one of Mesa's largest employers.
"Don Strauch was mayor of Mesa at a very important time in our city. We were growing, fast, and he recognized the value of working together as a region to launch us forward," Mayor John Giles said. "He was a true gentleman and represented Mesa with a lot of class. He knew how to disagree without being disagreeable. He will be missed."
That regional perspective led him to the Sister Cities program and the many benefits communities receive from international relationships. He established Guaymas, Mexico as Mesa's first Sister City and was active in the organization well into the 2000s.
Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh is the City Council representative to Mesa Sister Cities and worked with Strauch on many Sister Cities initiatives.
"Don Strauch was not only a valued statesman and public servant for Mesa but also an ambassador of international goodwill," Vice Mayor Kavanaugh said.
Mayor Strauch is survived by his wife Chris; daughter Christy; and five nieces and nephews.
