Mesa Sprint Triathlon Sept. 25 Benefits Youth Programs

Registration is underway for the 10th Annual Mesa Sprint Triathlon Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7 a.m. at Skyline Aquatic Center, 845 S. Crismon Road. The event consists of a 400-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run. This year, there will be an option of a duathlon, 5K run only and the Kids Splash-N-Dash which begins at 9 a.m. Athletes can also choose to compete in the annual Mesa Sprint Triathlon in person or virtually.

The Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation organizes the event to raise funds for scholarships that give underprivileged youth access to swim lessons, summer youth camps, adaptive weight loss programs and other healthy activities.

"Without the generosity of the Foundation for Mesa Parks and Recreation and fundraisers like Mesa Sprint Triathlon, we wouldn't be able to assist families who need that extra support," said Andrea Moore, Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Director. "We feel that every child should have the opportunity to play and learn with us."

As an all-volunteer organization, the foundation relies on donations from the community, fundraising events like the triathlon and sponsorships.

"This year, we expect to have up to 800 people registered for the event. It is very exciting to see so many people out racing again and getting involved in the community," said Becky Robson, Mesa Sprint Triathlon Race Director.

Registration for the triathlon is available at www.mesasprinttriathlon.com. The cost to participate is $99 for individuals and $140 for relay teams, $99 for the duathlon, $45 for the 5K run and $35 for the Kids Splash-N-Dash. Oct. 23 is the deadline to register.
