City of Mesa News

The City of Mesa is celebrating Arbor Day, held annually on the last Friday of April, by hosting various events throughout the City this month. Arbor Day is especially significant this year since Mayor Giles unveiled his new "Trees Are Cool" Initiative in February, with a goal of planting 1,000,000 trees in the City by 2050.
Here are some of the events that are happening this month:
April 17 - The Mayor and Council proclaimed that April 28 is Arbor Day in the City of Mesa, an annual celebration of trees and their value to our community.
April 19 - Bike to Work Day and Green Expo featuring a "Trees Are Cool" exhibit and prize giveaway, The Plaza at Mesa City Center at 56 E Main St, 7 to 9 a.m.
April 19 - Tree Planting and National Volunteer Week Proclamation, Emerald Park, 1455 S Harris Dr, 9 to 10 a.m. Volunteers from PricewaterhouseCoopers will be assisting with the tree planting.
April 25 - Tree Planting, Skyline Park, 655 S Crismon Rd, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Community partners include Shutterfly, The Boeing Company, Arizona Sustainability Alliance, West Coast Arborists and Skyline High School.
April 28 - Mayor John Giles, Mesa Council Members and community stakeholders will read The Lorax by Dr. Seuss to third-grade students at 12 schools throughout Mesa. Students will also plant a Blue Palo Verde seed and be encouraged to record their new tree on our "Trees Are Cool" website once they plant their new tree.
April 28 - Arbor Day Open House and Tree Seedling Giveaway at Red Mountain Library, 635 N Power Rd, 1 to 4 p.m. The event includes Arizona 811 Blue Stake locator information, Seed Library information and seed giveaway, a landscaping and tree book display, and take-and-make crafts for kids, teens and adults.
The "Trees Are Cool" Initiative is part of Mesa's larger Climate Action Plan, updated in June 2022. The Plan outlines the City's commitment to protect and conserve our environment and natural resources proactively and responsibly. We set forth ambitious, community-focused goals that will contribute to the overall climate impact for Mesa. Trees play a crucial role in our ability to meet those goals by helping clean our air, shade, and cool our neighborhoods.
Arbor Day and the "Trees Are Cool" Initiative aligns with Mesa City Council's strategic priorities of Sustainable Environment and Neighborhoods and Placemaking.
