City of Mesa News

Mesa invites the public to view the newly installed Bike to Books contest winning designs along canal shared-use paths. The colorful youth art celebrates reading, community and exercise. Through bold color and imagination, this contest engages Mesa's youth to transform these popular recreation amenities into vibrant gateways of artistic expression.
The winning artwork by youth artists Ellie Richardson, Valentina Mercado Villalobos and KysaRaye Hamann is installed on the Stadium Connector Shared Use Path just north of Cinemark Theatre at Mesa Riverview. Mesa's Transportation Department's striping crew brought the designs to life by using propane torches to heat and install the thermal plastic to the pathway.
The contest received fifty submissions from local young artists spanning three age categories (pre-k to 2nd grade, 3rd grade to 6th grade, and 7th to 12th grade). Contest winners received a prize package that includes backpack filled with gear from Mesa Public Library and Mesa Transportation's MesaMoves Program. Every finalist also received a certificate signed by City officials celebrating their contribution .
Residents are encouraged to use the path to find the artwork and take advantage of custom reading lists created by Mesa Public Library with inspiration from each design.
