Mesa Celebrates Grand Opening of Gateway Library in Southeast Mesa

December 2, 2025 at 12:55 pm

Mesa invites residents to celebrate the grand opening of the new Gateway Library on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 a.m., located at 5036 S. Eastmark Parkway. This state-of-the-art facility is Mesa's first new full-service library in 30 years, offering innovative spaces and programs for the entire community.

"The Gateway Library is a beautifully designed facility that reflects what it means for Mesa to be a full-service city. This is one of the many amenities we are proud to provide for our residents. I'm excited to celebrate its opening and grateful to Mesa's voters for supporting the bond issue that made this project possible." said Mayor Mark Freeman

The 28,000 square foot Gateway Library features an open concept design with rows of books under a high ceiling and bright lights. Amenities include a multipurpose room, THINKspot collaborative makerspace, digital art wall, study rooms, hold lockers, a teen lounge and robust children's area. Outdoor spaces connect the interior to reading patios and a plaza for events. Already recognized for its exceptional design with a 2024 Library Interior Design Award from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and the American Library Association (ALA), the building is already a striking landmark.

As a Certified Autism Center™ through IBCCES, Gateway Library includes a dedicated sensory room with specialized lighting, color palettes, acoustics and furnishings that support neurodiversity. Mesa is the first Autism Certified City, and this library advances that commitment.

"Opening the Gateway Library is a major milestone for our community and one that has been a long time coming," said Vice Mayor Somers. "This reflects our belief that libraries are essential to building strong, educated and connected neighborhoods. Southeast Mesa has been waiting patiently for a resource like this , and I'm thrilled that families, students and lifelong learners will now have a world-class library close to home. "

"We are excited to cut the ribbon and open this stunning, innovative library that will provide a much-needed service and space for the entire community in this part of Mesa," said Polly Bonnett, Mesa Public Library Director. "The library is a beacon of creativity and opportunity for all, and we can't wait for our residents to see all that Gateway Library has to offer."

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, family-friendly activities will run until 2 p.m., including:
•Henna, face painting and bubble artists
•A photo booth, costumed book characters
•Live music
•Historical characters and games presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), to promote the America 250 celebration
•Interactive stations from various City of Mesa departments, including Arizona Museum of Natural History, Mesa Fire and Medical, Parks and Recreation, Solid Waste, Transportation and Water Resources.

Event attendees can complete a Gateway Library Passport, exploring the library's features and earning prizes along the way.

Funding for the Gateway Library is from both the 2018 General Obligation Bond approved by voters and construction sales tax. Willmeng Construction built the library, and Richrd Kennedy Architects, known for award-winning library designs, created the building's design.

The Gateway Library is located in the Eastmark neighborhood but is open to everyone. Mesa Public Library cards are free for anyone who lives, works, attends school or owns property in Maricopa County. Full services begin Monday, Dec. 8, with hours Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
